Bleutge! Oklahoma! was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first musical, based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs. This classic musical set in the Early American West at the time that Oklahoma was about to become a state, shows the conflict of ranchers and farmers represented by two love stories. One pair of lovers is Curly and Laurey, he a cowboy and she a farm gal, whose love is threatened by Jud Fry, Laurey’s villainous hired hand. The second is the hilarious courtship of farm gal, Ado Annie, the girl who can’t say “No” and her jealous cowboy, Will Parker, who has to win her away from Ali Hakim, the peddler. Laurey’s lovable Aunt Eller is able to bring about the peace. The show features several other characters that represent those typical of the Old West. Many old favorite songs from the show include: “Oh What a Beautiful Morning”, “Surrey with the Fringe on Top”, “People Will Say We’re in Love” and of course the title song, “Oklahoma!”. |
