Plot Synopsis

Brigadoon, a musical by Lerner and Loewe, tells the story of a Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years, though to the villagers the passing of each century seems to be no longer than one night. The enchantment is viewed by them as a blessing rather than a curse, for it saved the village from destruction. According to their covenant with God, no one from Brigadoon may ever leave or the enchantment will be broken, and the site and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever. Two modern American hunters, Tommy and Jeff, who are lost in the highlands, stumble upon the village just as a wedding is about to be celebrated. Their arrival causes some complications, as the village is still in the 1700’s. As the plot moves forward, Tommy falls in love with Fiona, a village lass, and thinks about staying even after he learns the truth about the village from the schoolmaster, Mr. Lundie. His friend Jeff, much more cynical, manages to avoid the attentions of another village lass, Meg, who just wants to find a man. Meanwhile, Charlie Dalrymple, a young village man prepares to marry his love, Jean, sister to Fiona. Danger occurs when Harry Beaton, who also loves Jean, threatens to leave Brigadoon and cause it to disappear forever. Though Beaton is stopped, a shaken Tommy regretfully bids Fiona farewell, and he and Jeff watch Brigadoon disappear in the mist for another 100 years. Back in New York City, Tommy realizes his mistake and returns to the highlands in a desperate attempt to find Brigadoon again. Is he successful? Come ye and find out.

Musical numbers from the show include: “Brigadoon”, “Waitin’ For My Dearie”, “I’ll Go Home With Bonnie Jean”, “The Heather on the Hill”, “Almost Like Being in Love”, and “From This Day On”, plus many more, including several Scottish dances.
