Disney’s Aladdin Jr. is based on
the Disney animated movie, adapted especially for younger performers,
and includes all the songs from the movie, plus a few others. The music
is by Allen Menken, the lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, book
adapted and additional lyrics by Jim Luigs and music adapted and
arranged by Bryan Louiselle. This version of the tale, a bit different
from the movie, is taken from the Arabian Nights and features a poor
beggar boy, Aladdin, who falls in love with a lovely princess, Jasmine.
The evil Jafar, who wants both Jasmine and power, has Aladdin thrown
into a cave, where he finds a magic lamp. When Aladdin rubs the lamp, a
genie appears who grants him three wishes, and takes him for a ride on a
magic carpet. As Prince Ali, Aladdin becomes very rich and now has a
chance to win Jasmine’s love. However, he still has to fight the evil
Jafar, and eventually confess to Jasmine that he is not really a Prince.

Our play does not have Abu, the monkey or
Jasmine’s tiger, but does include the wise-cracking parrot, Iago. Many other characters add to the
enjoyment and fun of the show, and everyone gets to sing and dance.
The Academy Award-winning songs
are all there, including “Arabian Nights”, “One Jump Ahead,” “Friend
Like Me,” “Prince Ali,” and of course, “Whole New World.”
