Auditions for “42nd Street”

The Sterling Playmakers is pleased to announce auditions for our summer musical, “42nd Street.” Auditions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 4-5 and from 1 to 5 p.m. on May 6. Callbacks are by invitation only, May 7.

Auditions and callbacks will be held at Cascades Senior Center, 21060 Whitfield Place, Sterling, VA, 20165.

Performances will be held July 28-30, August 4-6 and August 11-13 at Potomac Falls High School.

What will auditions consist of?
We will be bringing in groups of eight at a time to audition. The music and acting part of the audition will consist of:

  • A group sing of “Lullaby of Broadway”
  • A individual song audition with a song selected for the character you’re most interested in (see below).
  • A short dialogue scene selected by you
  • A short dialogue scene selected by another member of the audition group

Individual audition songs differ by character. The audition will only require an excerpt from the song. Dialogue scenes will be available for review prior to the audition slots. We recommend onhealthy reviewing the audition songs beforehand so you get the hang of them. There are numerous versions available on YouTube.

Dorothy: “A Quarter to Nine”
Peggy: “Young and Healthy”
Billy: “Dames”
Annie, Maggie, Phyllis: “Go Into Your Dance”
Andy, Bert, Julian, Mac, Pat, Ensemble and Stage Crew: “Lullaby of Broadway”

Callbacks will include other character songs from the show.

After that, the group will be sent to a separate room for a dance audition. Our choreographer will teach you a simple dance routine and then have you perform it.

What roles are available to try out for?
All roles are available and open for casting. A list of the roles and the requirements of each part is available HERE.

Do I need to bring anything?
Headshots and performance resumes are optional. Audition forms will be available on the day, but if you’d like to fill it out now and bring it to auditions, the file is HERE.

Great, how do I sign up?
Just walking into auditions is fine. Audition groups will start on the hour and half-hour, so plan to arrive a few minutes early. However, if you’d like to sign up for a specific time, please sign up using Sign-Up Genius:

What about roles for kids?
“42nd Street” does not traditionally have roles for kids in the show. Auditioners should at least appear high school age. However, because part of the Playmakers’ mission is to provide performance opportunities for all ages, we will be adding a children’s chorus to perform before the show and during intermission. Auditions for the this group will be held later in the month. For additional details, email

But, I’m not really a dancer…
Come audition anyway. As with any summer musical, there will be performers of all different skill levels. We plan on a lot of rehearsal time to ensure that everyone looks good. There are also some roles that require limited dance work.

What’s the time commitment for the summer musical?
You can download a draft version of the rehearsal schedule HERE. Please review when filling out the audition form and figuring out your conflict dates.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at auditions and hope that you’re as excited as we are. If you have any more questions, please contact
